Short answer
On iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Data (Cellular) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, scan the code and give the line a name like 'Travel'. When you arrive, set Mobile Data to the travel eSIM and turn on Data Roaming for it.
Before you start
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure your iPhone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM (iPhone XR/XS or newer).
- Open the QR code from your email or order page on another screen, or use the 'Install on this iPhone' button (iOS 17.4+).
Install the eSIM
- Open Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular).
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code. If you're on the same iPhone, tap 'Install on this iPhone' on the order page instead.
- Tap Continue and wait about a minute while the eSIM activates.
- Name the new line 'Travel' so you recognise it.
- Choose your primary line for calls, iMessage and FaceTime (keep your normal number).
- For mobile data, choose your primary line for now, and turn off 'Allow Mobile Data Switching'.
When you land
- Settings → Mobile Data → select 'Travel' as your mobile data line.
- Tap 'Travel' and switch on Data Roaming. This is required: travel eSIMs connect as roaming.
- Wait a minute. You should see a local network name and 4G/5G in the status bar.
Not connecting?
- Check that Data Roaming is on for the travel line (not your home line).
- Restart your iPhone.
- Toggle Airplane Mode for 10 seconds.
- Settings → Mobile Data → Travel → Network Selection: turn off Automatic and pick a network.
- Don't delete the eSIM: a QR code can usually only be installed once.
Can't scan the code? Install manually
Choose 'Enter Details Manually' and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code shown on your order page and in your email.
