Short answer
On Samsung go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code. On Pixel go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead. After landing, set the eSIM as your mobile data SIM and turn on roaming for it.
Before you start
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and support eSIM (Galaxy S20+, Pixel 3+ and most recent models).
- Have the QR code ready on another screen (email or order page).
Samsung Galaxy
- Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
- Tap Add eSIM.
- Choose 'Scan QR code from service provider' and scan.
- Confirm and name the eSIM 'Travel'.
- Keep your normal SIM for calls and SMS.
Google Pixel
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
- Tap '+ Add SIM' or 'Download a SIM instead?'.
- Scan the QR code and follow the prompts.
- Name it 'Travel'.
When you land
- Open SIM manager (Samsung) or SIMs (Pixel).
- Set the travel eSIM as your Mobile data SIM.
- Open the travel eSIM and turn on Roaming.
- Give it a minute to connect to a local network.
Troubleshooting
- Roaming must be on for the travel eSIM.
- Restart the phone and toggle Airplane Mode.
- Select a network manually under Mobile networks → Network operators.
- Use the manual SM-DP+ address and activation code if scanning fails.
