Travel eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM: which is cheapest?
Updated 21 October 2026 · 5 min read · by the Hopsim team
For most trips a travel eSIM is the cheapest and easiest option: you pay once for a data bundle (often a few dollars) instead of daily roaming fees, and you're online the moment you land. Roaming is easiest but expensive outside your home region; a local SIM can be cheap but costs time and usually needs a passport.
Roaming with your own carrier
Convenient: nothing to install. But outside your home region, carriers typically charge a daily fee or high per-MB rates. A two-week trip can easily cost more than the flight upgrade you skipped. EU residents roam free within the EU, but not in the UK, Switzerland, Turkey or beyond.
Local SIM card
Often cheap per GB, but you need to find a shop, queue, show your passport in many countries, and swap SIM trays, which means losing access to your own number and SMS codes while it's out.
Travel eSIM
- One clear price, bought before you leave.
- Installs in 2 minutes; keeps your own SIM active for calls and SMS codes.
- Uses local 4G/5G networks.
- Regional plans cover many countries with one eSIM.
- Data only: calls via WhatsApp, FaceTime or iMessage.
Quick verdict
- Short or multi-country trips: travel eSIM.
- EU resident travelling within the EU: your own roaming is free.
- Living somewhere for months and need a local number: local SIM.
